Bug Report VLC media player volume way too low

Hey,

I've started using OBS and like it a lot more than Xsplit. I've come across a problem with my music though. The in-game volume of League of Legends as well as my mic have perfect volume when streaming, but the volume of my music which is being played by VLC media player is much lower than what I'm actually listening to. Since I can't raise the volume for my viewers to hear without also completely destroying my ears it's quite a big problem. Until I can find a way to raise the volume of my music for my viewers without also raising the music for myself my viewers will be left without any music, which I feel lowers the quality of my stream.

Any help is much appreciated!

Do you have the same problem with other media players like Winamp or Foobar? Are you using some form of voice chat (Ventrillo or TeamSpeak) while streaming?

My first guess is you are using headphones while many of the viewers complaining about the low music are not. Listening to your stream though speakers won't let them hear every little detail (such as the music) as easily as headphones would. This is easy enough to test by trying out a different media player like Winamp or Foobar to see if the problem still persists. If it doesn't fix the problem, then there probably won't be much you can do aside from turning up the music volume.

If using a different media player fixes the problem, then you are probably using an odd output module in VLC. You can check this by going to the VLC Tools menu, and clicking on Preferences. Once the window opens, click the audio icon and check what you have set for the output module. Generally, you will want it set to "DirectX audio output" with the device as the "Primary Sound Driver".

If you are using voice chat and are running Windows Vista/7 then windows will turn down the volume of other programs by default while someone is talking. You can change this by right clicking on the little speaker icon to the left of your clock on the task bar, then click on playback devices. After that window opens, change to the Communications tab and change the option selected to "Do nothing" before clicking the OK button. You will have to fix the volume sliders in the mixer if you do this while a voice program is open.
