Question / Help Videos save in low quality no matter what I do

I've followed a few tutorials on YouTube on what to make my settings, but even after changing them, my video still comes out at a terrible quality. I have a 4k monitor, so I'd like my videos to come out as that as well. I tried using the auto configuration wizard as well, but they still came out bad. Any suggestions? Thanks. (Running OSX 10.15)

Following youtube tutorials was likely most of your problem.

Provide an OBS log showing your recording attempt please.

I want to move to OBS since finding out in the newest QuickTime update, movies over a certain length just disappear when you try to save them Hopefully if I can get this working, I can use it full time.

Settings - video, set your base and output resolutions to be the same
Settings - output
Under recording set:
Recording quality: indistinguishable
Recording format: MKV
Recording encoder: Software (x264, low cpu usage preset, increased file size)

So don't touch advanced at all? And how can I open the mkv file after it's saved?

using VLC media player to play it, and if you need an MP4 for editing, go to file - remux recordings in OBS.

And you should reset all the advanced settings back to default.

Yeah I need it for editing. I did the remux thing but it looks the same as if I saved it as an mp4 with the settings you said above. Can I not just save it as an mp4 in that case?

Is it because I never reset the advanced settings? How do I do that?

No you should NOT save directly to mp4.
EVER

Recordings saved directly to mp4 that do not finalize properly are rendered into digital trash compatible with NO programs
Even saved properly, there are a lot of editors that have problems with them.

And normally you would simply have never changed them since youtube "best settings" guides are basically universally garbage regardless of what program they're for.
But to reset them, you'd make a new profile in the profiles menu, switch to it, then set the output and video settings as I told you above.
