Question / Help Video degradation over time

Hi there,

I seemed to have everything ironed out with my BF4 Old Man Gamer stream, but upon watching the video there's an obvious degradation of the video. Everything, including my face on the webcam, starts getting really blocky.

I have a separate streaming PC doing the encoding, and it never says "dropping frames" or at least I haven't caught it saying that. I stream at 1080p @ 30fps on a 75 down / 50 up fiber internet connection and everything starts out great.

I ran my log file through the analyzer, and it said only there's a minor problem connecting to the local hub--but I don't believe that this is the issue. It's in DFW, and I'm in DFW.

Any help is MUCH appreciated!!!

This is the stream:

Here's my streaming PC:
Intel Xeon (4 core) 3.3Ghz, 6 GB RAM, GTX 560, Windows 7, Avermedia Live Gamer HD card.

Here's the log:

I watched your video, I appreciate you making it to try to show an example. My initial feeling about it is that it seems like as the pace being to pick up and things begin to move and the game world become more and more active, it does indeed begin to start showing blocking due to its lack of bitrate. I feel like 3500 may be a bit too low for 1080p, especially when things start moving more on screen. I feel like having more bitrate would help, but generally twitch doesn't like that sort of thing.

Because you're using a second PC for encoding, what you could try to do is changing the x264 CPU preset, depending on how powerful that particular system is. It's a xeon, and that computer is doing nothing but capturing and encoding, so perhaps try using a slower preset and see if that helps if you can't really up the bitrate.

Maybe also try 4000 bitrate despite the fact that it's generally not recommended. I feel like having a bit more breathing room for the stream would also help a bit as well, as 1080p requires a lot of data.

Also very nice job setting up the chroma key.

Thank you for the response, Jim!!

Would this lead you to believe the problem is just the bitrate / x264 preset? I've been considering overclocking the Xeon and adding 2 more gigs of RAM (for a total of 8 GB), but do you think this would not change anything?

Also, a couple of things:
1) Why is OBS reporting that I have only 4 GB in this log, when Win7 (x64) shows the full 6 GB?
2) I know OBS is open source and I'm a former C++ game programmer (I now work in the web & .NET world). Would the best way to contribute be plug-ins or what?

Thanks!

32bit programs can only access 4 gigs of virtual memory address space because 32bit pointers can only go from 0 to 4,294,967,295 (or 0x00000000 to 0xFFFFFFFF), while 64bit pointers can go from 0 to 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ...gigantic unfathomably big numbers, so they can access as much memory as they want for the next century's worth of technological progress pretty much.

As for plugins, if you wish to make a plugin, I would probably recommend waiting for the rewrite (at https://github.com/jp9000/obs-studio to be in a somewhat more usable state, as the API there is much more well documented, much easier to use, and more easily compatible with a wider range of languages, rather than 'just' C++.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother streaming BF4 at 1080p. There's just too much motion and it's too stressful on the system. 720p is more than enough, imo, especially at 3000 bitrate or so. Once you start going over 3000 bitrate, you'll really start to run into Twitch viewer lag issues.

By stressful on the system, do you mean my own streaming PC? I tried 720p, and I thought it didn't look nearly as crisp (obviously). Looking at what http://www.twitch.tv/unph4zed does, 1080p @ 60fps, it seems very doable--especially with my 75/50 internet. Now, I don't have a $20K rig like he does, but I don't think it would require one. We both use the same Twitch service.

Plus all of my friends say they have no trouble streaming it. The only person who complained, still complained after I had changed it to 720p. I'd like to make this work at 1080p/30fps if at all possible.

The ability to download a stream is going to depend on the bitrate, not the resolution. So if your stream was 720p and you didn't change the bitrate, it would be the same problem as 1080p.

The other factor is viewers being able to play it once they've downloaded it, and 1080p60 is the most stressful, and Flash is notoriously inefficient at displaying that. So that's how its beneficial to stream at 720p instead of 1080p.

If you're sure all your viewers can play 1080p (or don't care), and you're sure they all have excellent internet connections (or don't care about that either), then you can try increasing your buffer above 3500 while using a 3500 bitrate. This means that Twitch won't flag you for abusing their system, but you'll get the benefits of increased quality, at the cost of fewer people being able to successfully view your stream. So try something like 3500 bitrate, 4500 buffer.

I recently uploaded one of my YouTube videos to Twitch using the Video Source plugin to try this very thing out, 1080p60 @ 3500/4500. Was able to do Faster preset on my 4770k, almost could do Fast but too many duplicated frames: http://www.twitch.tv/boildown/c/3700748 . I actually think it plays back pretty well, but I don't normally stream like this because it just limits who can watch (not that I get many viewers in any case :P ).

Great info, I didn't realize that. What would be the ideal bitrate if I decided to go 720p?

I don't stream at 60 frames, only 30 frames, which looked a lot better than 720 @ 60 as far as I could tell.

Forgive my ignorance, what are the differences between the fast/faster/veryfast etc. presets? Remember, encoding is all this PC is doing. My gaming PC is the one processing all the game content to an HDMI source.

The slower the preset, the higher quality the encode. So use the slowest one your computer can handle without more than 1% duplicated or late frames (between 0.00 and 0.99% duplicated frames usually looks ok, as a rule of thumb). The log file tells you how many frames were duplicated or were late. Once you see too many, you use a faster preset. Its its near 0%, use a slower preset (not THE slower preset) and see what happens.
