Video capture Question

For a long time I've been using the game capture to capture my Elgato Corsair Capture Card. I know i heard others been using the video capture to capture that capture card. Just mine always been ether not showing up or just black thing. So my question if i can ever get help here is how do people make that work? To me i think it just pure luck cause mine doesn't work.
