Question / Help Video Adapter

Hello, i have recently had the idea of streaming on twitch but when i looked up a tutorial for obs it told me everything to do to start streaming, but i have noticed that it is blank in video adapter and with this being blank, i cant record my screen. This has really put me down as i really want to stream, i would really like some help with this.

PS: i couldnt get a picture of it, but all i can say is when i open obs, it is black above 'start streaming' etc.
