USB mixer+ OBS question: I have a problem with my xenyx 302 usb mixer in my streaming set up. The sound from my desktop audio is coming through the mic. It's reading on the OBS sound board. Why is this? I can find no videos that address this issue, nor can I find anything to give me any support. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this problem, so why cant I find any help? I stream on a laptop. With OBS, Windows 10 using a xenyx 302 and a shure MV7 mic. I want help in setting this up correctly. I'm sure there are people here who have experince with streaming. I just want all my sounds separate to be able to control them. Desktop audio should NOT be coming through the mic.

Log file (not really relevant, but) https://obsproject.com/logs/6TEM403NsVMdcp6z

In the Xenyx, you have to disable USB Play. Push the FROM button an let in the position of Line In (upper position).

Then, on the LINE/USB leave the Button FROM and TO on the lower position. This way the PC audio will sound through the Phones output but not the MAIN MIX

The Xenyx sends the same audio through USB Output and the MAIN MIX Output.

The sound from my desktop audio is coming through the mic.
Hi Vidgirl8, what is your problem? That the microphone is actually picking up the sound from your speakers? In that case you'd try to lower the volume, don't have the speakers monitoring the desktop audio at all, or increase the distance between speakers and mic.

Or is the problem that your desktop audio is NOT recorded directly into your stream?
In your log I see many times monitoring: monitor only. As far as I know this is not the default setting for Media Sources. What's the purpose?

At the Audio Mixer with these mp3, mp4, etc. sources: click the cog wheel/gear icon and select Advanced Audio Properties. Look at the Audio Monitoring dropdown. Here Output means the stream or recording from OBS Studio and Monitor means the sound (headphones, speakers) for the technician, presenter, etc. So select either
Monitor Off : sound goes only to the stream/recording, not to the speakers
Monitor Only (mute output) : sound goes only to the speakers, not to the stream/recording
Monitor and Output : sound goes both to the stream/recording and to the speakers

Hope this helps.

This happens whether obs is engaged or not. It happens if the mic is connected or not. Desktop audio plays through my mic channel. I have discovered that this is not an uncommon problem, but all of the so called "fixes" that I seem to find do not work.

explain how you play desktop sound on disconnected mic ?

microphone is input device
speakers is output device

you can monitoring mic only if presents, check setting in system audio.
you can monitoring any sound in obs in Advanced Audio Properties (select correct options).
in default settings obs send stream with audio from speakers and mic, check settings tab Audio.

You're using the USB mixer as your Windows speakers device, through USB.

You're using the USB mixer as your Audio Input Device, and due to your specific setup that includes your Desktop Audio, unless you change the FROM/TO buttons in the mixer.
