I have streamed on and off for years but just this last year started a new project where I live stream to YouTube of my backyard Pond. I spent all last summer working on a pond so that I could mount cameras and watch it from inside a warm house. To play it cheap I stayed with USB web cameras because of the simplicity of connecting them and more I could pipe the waterfall sound right into my sound system which other type of cameras such as IP cameras wouldn't work out all that well.
For this I was able to find a USB Extender over Cat5 network cable which allows me to place the cameras up to 150~ feet away from the computer. I built custom housings for the cameras which as of this point seems to be working and the cameras have not died as of yet. I currently have 3 Logitech c310 cameras with two of them being outside sharing a 4 port USB Extender. I'm planning on putting a 3rd camera outside (Logitech 920) soon which comes to my main question for today.
How much bandwidth does a web camera use (1280x720)? How many cameras can USB support when it comes to total bandwidth needed -- not counting the limitations of Windows USB and it's 27 or so devices support.
Is there anyway I can monitor how much bandwidth the overall USB hubs are using at any given time?
Also interesting note using more than 1 Logitech camera with the focus and other issues. I found, not sure yet, but I found that the cameras are based on the hub and any camera sharing the same hub will as well share the focus.
