Hey all,
Broadcaster on Twitch here, ran into a bit of a snag and wondered if anybody on this side of the fence has experienced anything similar and could shed some light on potential solutions.
Core of the problem: Whenever I begin streaming, anywhere within an hour my download and upload speeds will tank for about 15-30 minutes, restore itself back to full speeds for 30-60 minutes, and then repeat the same process over and over.
This only occurs while I’m streaming. My internet speeds suddenly can no longer support the bitrate I stream at, creating a 2-4 minute video delay for videos in addition to constant buffering (upon trying to stop the stream during this issue, it’ll take a few minutes for it to actually end), and a noticeable amount of latency to the MMO I’m playing occurs as well. It’s fairly consistent overall. When I’m not streaming through OBS, my speeds are stable all day, completely fine. CPU usages while streaming are also consistently very low.
Internet speeds will drop from 10ms ping to a nearby Speedtest server with 60/down and 30/up to maybe 50ms and 30/down (sometimes the download is unaffected and remains at 60) and the upload will bog down to as low as <1Mbps.
I’ve reached out to my ISP a number of times. When I’m streaming, I’m the only one in the house uploading that much data or using the internet at all. It seems to happen at any hour of the day. They tried replacing the router, didn’t work. I tried a direct connection to the modem through an Ethernet cord, didn’t work. Other than that, I’m always hard-wired directly into the router, no wireless. They tried replacing the modem, didn’t work either.
This problem is fairly recent. I’ve had the same ISP for quite a long time now, but these problems only occurred within the last few weeks. It’s effectively disabled my ability to stream though. I’d been streaming since maybe 2012 otherwise without this particular issue happening before (there was a similar issue where like, once per stream in the early morning my speeds would tank, but it would only really only happen once a session).
They aren’t throttling when I asked (nor have they ever before). Don’t think there’s a cap, considering after a little bit of time my speeds just restore themselves. Doesn’t seem to be any line ingress either, from what they told me while running tests from their plant. Obviously cannot be DDoS to my knowledge either, as this can happen as soon as I hit the Start Stream button and I doubt I’d be able to use the internet at all if it was (outside of actually streaming, the bandwidth is enough to do anything basic on the internet, like playing videos or browsing fairly uninhibited).
My OBS settings have not changed at all from my previous settings that have always worked in the past. I don’t believe there’s anything running in the background that’s causing this hourly fluctuation either, but maybe I’m not checking hard enough?
tl;dr – Only while streaming, upload speeds will randomly tank. Most measures that I could think of to prevent it I’ve taken, but I’m somewhat clueless on additional things to look for otherwise. Any ideas for me to check welcome.
Much obliged in advance for any input!
