Just a comment about how seemingly unsociable and rather unfriendly this forum comes across as. As a Newbie I posted a thread and normally on other forums you at least get a welcome and an answer. On this one ,not a word except a curt message from admin that I need to keep on posting to be lucky enough to actually recieve a reply.. I think from now I shall figure out any problems on my own via You tube from now on and let you lot get on with it.

Hi Gary, I wouldn't give up yet. There are a lot of very helpful people on here too and I'm sure someone will take a look at your question and try to help. Some people only watch specific threads and then take a general look across all threads less frequently, so there is a timing thing to consider. But overall, I think you will eventually find that people on here can be really helpful. But that's just my opinion and experience to date....and yes, I too still await some answers so I don't want to dismiss your experience...but I'm hopeful it will improve for you given some of the helpful people I know that are on here.

Well, you asked super basic things one usually finds out after playing with OBS Studio an hour or two. I, for myself, seldom answer to those threads, because while I write it, the poster already found out the answer by himself, and so my writing is of no use.

The word from the admin is not bad either - you see, almost all questions a newbie can have were already answered in the last years. You just have to find the answer. This is usually faster than any forum post, so I really suggest to improve your Google research skills.
There are not that many starter questions: "how can I present myself in a webcam", "how can I preview the recording while recording", "how can I look up something while showing something different" are one of those challenges everybody has. This is either about handling sources within OBS (which you have to find out yourself, because it's the main thing OBS is about) or about having 2 monitors instead of 1, so you have 1 monitor for the stuff you're recording and the second one for monitoring and information peeking.

I was new a year ago. but I am technically advanced, and recognize that most FOSS (free open-source software) usually comes with an expectation of user engagement (ie no paid for support for hand-holding). And what OBS does is complex and advanced, so best to set expectations accordingly. So, yes, some RTFM is expected by many. There are excellent guides on this site, and explanations of the basics already well documented on YouTube and elsewhere.
I answered more basic questions while I was unemployed and had the time, but now I find myself skimming over the basic questions that indicate a lack of basic self-help. sorry, I just don't have time, even though I do like to help out and pay back the community for a great tool that has been wonderful to use

To get out of the 'double screen view' (studio mode), click the 'Studio Mode' button in the bottom-right next to the 'start recording' button.

I'd say it more is a question of context.
Yes, a number of forum-goers will be less polite when the question asked would be answered by looking up a basic 'how to use OBS' tutorial. Or messing around with it for five minutes and experimenting, for those who prefer to choose their own adventures.

It becomes a question of people being here volunteering their limited personal time to help out the community, and seeing their fiftieth or five hundredth 'how do I add a webcam' or 'best settings plz' thread from people who expect to be hand-held on the level of 'to tip water out of boot, read instructions on heel' to anyone who has even poked at OBS casually for thirty minutes.
It does improve greatly once you get to the level of 'why is my webcam freezing up when I switch scenes' as that's less obvious. Even more when you get to 'how do I change the shape of my webcam inset' (use an image mask filter, by the way). Even more-so when you search for your question first to see if it's already been asked and answered.

It's purely a reaction to the absolute laziest of the lazy, expecting to just have everything magically work immediately, unwilling to do the smallest amount of research. Even watching through a video guide like the Nerd or Die OBS Tutorial Series is too much hassle for some of these. But if you do even basic diligence, generally people will put out the effort to help, in return. :)
