underpowered mic

I have recently attempted to use a headset mic (not integrated) for recordings, and the sound quality is not great. It was suggested to me that the mic may be underpowered.

A) How can I know/test if the mic is underpowered?
B) If true, what are my options for addressing the problem?

Is it a cheap headset mic? There's only so much you can do with audio, its a garbage in garbage out situation. If its a half decent one, then you may be able to adjust some of the device settings in windows to improve somewhat

I did not think it was cheap, but I may not be in a good position to know. Could you give an example of a non-cheap headset mic?
