undefined symbol: obs_object_release

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04. I have purged and reinstalled OBS 27.2.4 from the ppa, but keep getting this error message when I try to start:
obs: symbol lookup error: obs: undefined symbol: obs_object_release

I'm new to OBS and earlier I was messing around trying to build older versions to get both the background removal plugin and virtual camera to work. I suspect I broke some setting or dependency in the process, but I have no idea what it is or how to track it down. Previous errors I ran into include missing en locale and core dump after freeing OBS context data.

So to update, the symbol lookup error is still there for the ppa version after multiple reinstalls of various versions.
When I remove the ppa and use the Ubuntu version, I get segmentation error (core dumped).
There was a version that can run, not sure whether it was the flatpak or the snap version, but I can't use background removal in that version.
