Question / Help UI Freezing my OBS? (MSI) [Solved]

This problem is actually a little odd. It's not a problem with the stream freezing/lagging, or recordings not working; actually, everything works fine, except for the UI. Occasionally, while going through drop-down menus or opening new OBS windows, the entire program will freeze. When the program freezes, however, the stream preview still works, Task Manager reports it as responding, I can move the active OBS window around, and i can still hover over buttons, but clicking these buttons doesn't do anything: I can't close out of windows, i cant confirm anything, and i cant open or close drop-down menus. When the drop-down menus freeze, they also persist when other windows are active. The only way I can close OBS is via the Task Manager.

The same thing happens no matter what: 64x or 32x, preview enabled or not, using compatibility modes, running as administrator, reinstalling, and updating my graphics drivers. The most frustrating part is that I really doubt its anything to do with OBS, so it's a complete mystery what could possibly be causing this. The logs don't reveal anything that I recognize as some sort of an error, but who knows.

EDIT: I'm not sure why this fixed the problem (the fact this fixed the problem is a little more concerning than the problem itself), I just ran OBS using my integrated card (It's an Intel whateverthehell, it's in the log) instead of my dedicated card (Nvidia GTX 960M) and now everything works fine. Not sure how this will affect performance, all I know is that my graphics card is causing OBS to do odd things.

This is the exact problem I am having. OBS UI is crashing in the .json or something.. mostly when a menu is fading in (as seen in above users pics) but it can be any interaction with the UI .. pressing a button, right clicking, pulling up a menu,

OBS UI will freeze and cannot cancel, x out, close, or otherwise affect the program EXCEPT for Task Manager > End Task

OBS DOES continue to work in this frozen state. That is to say, if streaming when it happens, it will stream until end task. If recording it will record until you End Task. ONLY the UI is freezing.

I have isolated a windows system event that lines up with moment of the UI freeze.

I also have an Nvidia GTX960M video card in my MSI core i-7 Laptop, 8 gigs, connected via HDMI to a monitor (mirror same video on both screens).

I will post the system event info in the next reply (on other pc)
 
DistributedCOM event coincides with the exact time of the crash.


The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
and APPID
{9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Bump.

It takes at least 4 times as long to adjust settings when it keeps crashing while in the UI making changes.
And even while streaming, you have to switch scenes from time to time. I'm trying to use Hot Keys for Scenes now to see if I can work around the problem for now... but how long has this problem existed without a solution?
 
I'm seeing this in version 19.0.3 of OBS Studio when I have preview enabled, any resolution, at 60fps. Disabling the preview allows the UI to work. This bug is not present in OBS classic version.
 
Hey OP. Just curious if you've found a resolution to this issue? I'm having a similar issue (here) with similar hardware to you.
 
This wasn't a problem with just OBS Studio but an issue with MSI laptops specifically. I was content with using OBS Classic since it wouldn't freeze, but FireAlpaca and SAI 2 began to hang up, so I started trying to find a solution again so I could work. I started looking for MSI-specific freezes and found that closing Nahimic would keep the applications from freezing up. This bug is apparently fixed in the most recent Nahimic update, but it's not really necessary to have it open so I just close it. Kind of upset that it took a year for my lazy ass to find this out but I hope I can at least help people with the same annoying bug.

Unfortunately, this fix only applies to people with MSI computers since those are the machines Nahimic comes pre-installed on, but hopefully this fixes most of the problems.
