Question / Help Two webcams help? (Need a workaround)

Hello all,

Let's get it sorted, I want to use two webcams on OBS because my wife wants a cam too, but she is across the room.

If I plug two cams into my PC direct OBS works and I can see and add both, but when I plug in a USB cable extension, the only one I have is 10meter, then Windows does not recognise it and fails, only if I plug in direct both... So I am stumped.

Does anyone know a way around it? Any route I can take? I've tried using Skype to capture but it captures the sides and does not look clean cut if you get me, so I do not know what to do.

Are there any webcams with like a 6meter cable around? Is there a way I can capture her webcam from her PC to mine or something else? Why does it not work with a cable extension?

We both have the same webcam and when both plugged in direct it works but wife is across the room and cable to small so I have to use an extension.

If your only issue with using Skype was that it captured more than just the webcam window, just crop the capture source. Click the Edit Scene button, then hold Alt while dragging the edges of the source.

When in Skype and I edit the scene, it just makes it smaller, I could not cut the edges out or is that what ALT does? I can cut the edges out?

That is why I said to hold Alt while dragging the edges, yes. It will crop the source instead of resize it.

With Xsplit Broadcaster, you have one Webcam (local) and several IP Cam (throught Internet). Only we would have to ask for to developers'team that they add that function.

IP cameras can be added using the video source plugin in OBS1 and the media source type in OBS Studio. Not sure going through the trouble of setting one up is worth it if the Skype image quality is acceptable though.

The extension cable plus webcam cable length might be too long that USB signals may fail.

Maybe try putting USB hub between USB extension cables and webcam?

Worked like a charm cutting the edges with ALT. Another trick I learnt with OBS. It does cut quiet a lot though so you have to be specific.

Also Sirio, NO. Just no, I will never use X-split. I love OBS and the community, so I am sticking with it.



Sapiens, I do not understand what IP camera's or how you go about them. Any link for the plugin and what I do with it?

Kyle, a powered USB hub can act as a 'signal booster' for extra-long USB runs. You can also get a cable called a Bluerigger for extremely long hauls; a powered USB hub at the end is recommended though, as it uses USB power to run its built-in signal amplifier and rectifier, so it may not leave enough for any power-hungry devices (like webcams).

I have just changed to OBS Studio and the cropping feature does not work.

Any idea's?

In OBS studio, use a crop filter/effect. The crop filter in OBS studio might soon be replaced or improved soon...

Right click your webcam and choose "Filters" then click "+" to add crop. Not as good as OBS classic though.
Do I need to show you obs_studio_crop.gif ?

Thank you but I do not need to crop my webcam.

I need to crop a webcam in Skype which is using the window capture.
In classic I was able to capture Skype and then crop the edges down to fit the other persons webcam in... This time it is not allowing me.

On OBS-studio, it is still limited to having to add crop filter to get window capture to show a smaller area, like cropping an extra window stuff away from webcam area of skype.

Holding down ALT to crop does not work on OBS-studio (maybe not yet), use a crop filter.
