The Twitch.tv video player is sized to 16:9 and will always add black bars to a stream with other aspect ratios (like the 5:4 you're using). As long as your base resolution is set to 1280x1024 then the video you generate won't have black bars, but the video player will show them because that's the "empty area" your video doesn't fill up.

Assuming you've set OBS up correctly, the black bars are being added by the Twitch video player. If you want to stream at 1280x1024 then you can't get rid of the black bars added by the video player because that's not something you have control over.

the black bars are showing in obs and on twitch. So when i press preview it shows the black bars

Then either the game isn't running at 1280x1024 or you didn't set your base resolution to 1280x1024 like I suggested in my first reply.

I can't believe this hasn't been suggested yet. USE "EDIT SCENE" under the settings button and above the global sources.. button.

I was trying to record FEAR which in-game had a display of 800x600 however on OBS 800x600 is way too small and cut off the edges. I tried 1024x768, black bars. Once you see black bars, just press "EDIT SCENE" which can only be pressed if you activate PREVIEW STREAM. A red square will appear on the picture and just slide it until the black bars disappear. If you are able to get it perfect EXCEPT FOR ONE black bar, just tinker with the video resolution in the OBS settings.

Notice my older videos had the black bar http://www.youtube.com/user/DaemonMagister

You can also try right clicking a title under "Sources:" then Position/size > Fit to screen
