Transparent projector canvas background

Is it possible to make the full-screen projector overlay (which shows the stream or a scene on a secondary local monitor) transparent so it blends with the Windows desktop background or another program window underneath the projector overlay?

Very simple example case: Assume a completely empty scene with just a single source coming from (say) a capture card (scaled to full-screen). This scene is projected on a second local monitor. What I want to achieve is that when I hide the source, the projector output becomes transparent, since the scene is then empty, in order to show whatever else is on that screen "underneath" (e.g. the desktop background and/or other non-OBS windows). But instead the projector overlay just becomes black when it has no visible sources. I tried setting the video to sRGB (full) with alpha channel (BGRA), but the "empty" projector overlay background is still black and not transparent.

Is this a technical limitation of the render engine or is there some setting I overlooked to set the default (empty) scene background to transparent instead of black?
