Question / Help The Black Sides

So first off I'd like to say I've been using OBS for a little while, but only recently did I notice this problem when I looked at my Fraps made videos and compared the two. The problem is, the actual screen of capture when I am editing the program is quite small, black being all around the game being captured. It's quite an annoyance, as in Youtube when said project is finished, in order to see much you are /required/ to be in full screen.

This is quite problematic for me, and I would appreciate any help on the subject.

If you are using game capture and your game is a smaller image in the center, that means your game resolution does not equal your streaming resolution. What it also means is that your game is not running at your native monitor resolution (which is not really ideal). There are a few ways to fix this:

1.) Run your game at your monitor's native resolution (if your monitor is 1920x1080, run the game at the same)
2.) Run OBS at the resolution of your game (if your game is running at 1280x720 and OBS is set to capture your monitor at 1920x1080, you should change OBS' base resolution to 1280x720, which will allow you to capture the game at 1:1 pixel ratio
3.) Last/laziest alternative, but least prettiest and least efficient, is to just set game capture to "stretch to screen" in its properties

But.. isn't HD 1920x1080? I don't want to have to set it to non-HD, as it seems pretty retarded if that would be the case. I have text among other things in my video which may not be seen in a lower setting. (Or not very effectively at least) Will this effect how it can be seen in resolution on Youtube?

It appears that you didn't quite clarify whether I was correct or not, and if I was correct, it appears you did not fully read what I said.

Are you using game capture?

Are you capturing a game that is running at resolution smaller than your streaming resolution? (example, running a game in fullscreen at say 720p while your base stream resolution is 1080p. Emphasis on base resolution)

If so, then those are the solutions you have.

If that is not your problem, then you need to state specifically what your problem is, with a log file, and also preferably with a screenshot so I can see for sure what problem it is you're having. I'm just sort of guessing here you know based upon your description.

I am using Game Capture with OBS, my game runs at a resolution of 1280x768, windowed mode. I have OBS set to as stated earlier, 1920x1080. As for this, 'streaming' business. If you mean am I streaming? I'm not streaming to anything. Ex. Twitch.

I am capturing my game, saving it, and using the editor in order to spiffy it up, along with adding quite a few things such as voice over and etc.

And from what you were saying, that is my problem. However you never really answered my question either. Will I have to sacrifice HD for youtube when I upload if I were to mess around with these resolutions?

No, you don't have to sacrifice it but if you record the game at 1280x720 and upscale it to 1920x1080 you aren't gaining anything. Since you are playing the game at 1280x768 you should set the Base Resolution to that in OBS as Jim said here:

This would remove the black area around the capture.

Very well, long as I don't lose the HD then I'm fine by doing it. I'll let you all know how it goes. Though it looks like, I'll have to redo all the capturing process, which is unfortunate, but at least the problem is fixed. However something tells me I'll be sacrificing something, because a video tutorial told me to put it there for the highest quality. Hopefully he was wrong.

If the video tutorial told you to put your OBS base resolution at a higher resolution than the thing you were trying to stream, then yes, it was wrong.

Interesting dodgepong, and I realize this is about two days from when I last posted. However I did as asked, and now it ZOOMS IN far too much. In my game, I can only see half of my character on the OBS screen. Hate to break it to everyone in here, but it looks like the problem persists.

Also dodgepong, I don't think that's what the point was. The point was, if it LOWERS the quality of the end product, the video. You simply told me the video was wrong in setting it to a higher resolution, which in the end, didn't really answer much.

The only solution that works, is the, "Last/laziest" resort. Stretch to screen however, he mentioned, is quite hideous and to which I will be making youtube videos, I would prefer to have HD video.

If the game resolution is the same at the base resolution then it should fit perfectly, if you do Fit to Screen no quality should be lost.

It is as I said, it zoomed in far too much. However.. Fit to Screen and Stretch to screen are two different things, as I do believe. They are two different options, at the very least, and Fit to Screen does nothing that I'm aware of. (Tried toggling it on and off)

Do this:

1) Delete the current game capture that you have.

2) Set your OBS base resolution to 1280x720 with no downscale.

3) Run your game and set the resolution to 1280x720 windowed.

4) Add the new game capture to OBS.

That should give you a 720p video with no black borders.
