Temporary .MKV file storage

Where does OBS store .MKV files whilst you are recording? Is it a user setting or does it choose a default space in Windows?

There's no temp file, the file is written in the location specified on the recording tab.

It shows 0 bytes during recording - it only updates to the full size once recording stops. Where is the data stored in the meantime?

I see the file getting larger on my system, not sure what's up with yours.

Exit/re-open the folder you are recording to, the file size should change while you are recording. I write to a ZFS storage pool, probably why I see my recordings getting larger every second.

Windows just isn't updating you on the file's size. It's still being recorded in that location.

There is no temporary location the videos are moved from.

Windows OS file size changing during file use is a design nature of NTFS since the '90s (was that way in NT 3.5/4.0). Hasn't changed.
I don't recall exactly, but would guess FAT/FAT32 behavior in Windows Explorer would be same/similar. You can Refresh the folder view to see current/new size. Changing your Folder view to another folder and back is one way to trigger the OS/Explorer to rescan file metadata.
