Question / Help Sudden capture performance problems with DX9 games

Hi there

Up until 3 days ago I could use the local capture feature for my games just fine, at 2560x1440/30 (no downscale), 50000kbps, 320kbps 48khz AAC. I know these are high settings but I do have capable hardware and this has always been working very smooth without any framerate drops while playing.

Now since Microsoft's last patch day, this Tuesday (May 13), i'm getting extreme stuttering when OBS is capturing or streaming, no matter what settings. I can lower the bitrate to just 1500kbps and it would still stutter the same way.

Nothing else has changed on my PC. All drivers are up to date.

Detailed specs:

ASUS Z87-WS
Intel i7-4770k at 4400Mhz
16GB DDR3-2133/C9
Nvidia Geforce GTX 780ti (1124Mhz Boost)
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
2x Seagate ES.3 4TB in RAID0 (sequential write speed is about 380MB/s, plenty for OBS)

Windows 8.1 Pro x64 up-to-date
Latest OBS 0.622b (tried older versions to make sure this is no regression problem)

The stuttering does not happen in Direct X11 games.

Direct X9 games tested:

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Skyrim
The Witcher 2

Direct X11 games tested (absolutely smooth capturing):

Metro Last Light
GRID 2
Battlefield 4

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance and best regards

Thanks for the response.

I'm afraid no, I can't uninstall windows updates. Its dozens of update packages and I would just mess up my system trying to remove them not knowing the dependencies.

It could be that Microsoft changed something in WDDM 1.3 (the display/window manager) that interfers somehow with OBS and DirectX9 but i'm no developer and don't know much about how it works.

What I noticed is that OBS' settings really don't matter, there will be terrible stuttering as soon its capturing is activated. The framerate is still showing a solid 60 FPS however it looks and feels more like 10-15 FPS.

If I can assist you with any kind of log files please let me know.
