Question / Help Stupid Question Time - Capture Card vs PCI-E speed

Hi Everyone,

I know this will sound stupid but I cannot find an answer on it. I know that when adding an additional PCIE Graphics card to your machine, if you don't have a CPU with more than 16 pci lanes and a mobo that can support true dual 16x slots, your PCIE lane will drop to 8x (with 2 cards).

My question is, if I add a capture card, something like an Elgato HD60 Pro to my system (8700k + 1080Ti + Asus XI Hero) will my 1080ti drop to 8x from 16x?

Depending on the motherboard layout and which pci-e slot you install the card in.

Thanks Harold - into one of the small PCI-E 1 slots I believe should be fine?

Not always. It depends on where the given slots are attached (chipset vs cpu)

If you don't know better, and your mainboard manual doesn't state any specific slot for that kind of expansion cards as well, just put the capture card into some random slot. Then fire up GPU-Z and check if the GPU still shows up wit x16 speed. If it does, fine. It it doesn't do, move the capture card to a different slot and check again with GPU-Z, until you find a proper slot.
