Question / Help Streaming Rollercoaster Tycoon 2

Hey guys, I've been using OBS to stream most of my games this summer and it has worked flawlessly. I love using the program, setting up stream is fun and there's a lot of creative things that you can do.

I've run in to a bit of a problem though, when trying to stream rollercoaster tycoon 2. When I usually stream RCT1, I can set the game to windowed mode and just stream using window capture because game capture in full screen doesn't work. In RCT2, there's no integrated windowed mode in the game -- now, I've tried using the windowed mode hack for RCT2 but playing that game in windowed mode, at least on my computer is very buggy, and frames suffer a lot, even with OBS not open. And when I start to stream, it's pretty much a fucking nightmare and barely runs. Definitely unplayable. Now, I was wondering if there was a way to play the game in full screen, and then use game capture for this game?

Game capture only works on DX9 games and higher or OpenGL games, so it definitely won't work with RCT2. If you don't want to try to get Windowed mode working, you'll have to look into buying a capture card.

Is there any hope for pre-dx9 to get game capture?

Is it even possible?

It's possible, but I'm not sure how long it will be until it will be done. Jim wants to work on Dx8 at some point, and bl00drav3n is working on a DirectDraw capture method right now.

What program were you using to try to put it into a window? There might be alternatives out there. I've seen people stream RCT2 successfully before.

I was using some thing that I found from a youtube video. I just had a few scripts/dlls that drew it in a window instead of full screen. There wasn't any program per se.

Weird approach if your PC can handle it -- run Rullercoaster Tycoon 2 inside of a Virtual Machine. Inside of the VM, just run it in fullscreen and run the VM as a window. And then capture the window in OBS. ;)

I know, silly workaround but if all else fails, it should work. And given the fact RCT2 is in its 11th year by now the hardware requirements of running it inside of a VM shouldn't be too excessive.

I've actually never worked with a VM. But it sounds like a fun idea. I'll try it.
