Question / Help Streaming Rig/Games help

Hey guys, I'm currently trying obs instead of ffsplit..because there are some issues with ffsplit and dxtory (random disconnects from stream without using Amarectv and Amarectv randomly shits out so you cant use it for weeks)

Computer Specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2320 CPU @ 3.00GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GT 430

Note* I know..graphics card is huge bottleneck, but I adjust games until I'm way over 60 fps, and I can still keep their windows @ 1280x720

Also: Trying to stream games @ 30fps..it doesn't lag my games.

I'm wanting the highest quality stream where people can easily read text. I see guys in the EU playing dota all the time, and while yes..their rigs may be a bit better..their streams are clearer. The clearest I've gotten is with ffsplit..pretty damn close but I think obs can give me what I'm looking for.

I've been messing with the options, even setting it to placebo..with no noticeable hit to my processor when I'm playing dota..1280x720 10/placebo 2000/2000kbps

Just messing around with the program since I don't know about it that much..but I would think selecting placebo would either crash the computer or something..I kept switching everything with no noticeable difference in clarity..so I come here asking for your help.

If the only thing is I'm hindered by my upload..and I won't be able to have a clear stream because of that..then I want to know how the dota guys have theirs set up in the eu..because their net is supposed to be worse xD

What do you think placebo preset does for the x264 encoder?

The preset levels are Time(CPU) vs Space tradeoffs. They improve encoder efficiency in terms of bits. This might be 10% difference between highest and lowest settings. If you want to capture more details, then increase the number of bits. If you want even better quality use the quality settings like quality=10 vs quality=0. This will give the encoder more image detail to work with. That you are already doing.

Anyways, post a log and provide a sample.

You shouldn't even be able to stream with anything less than veryfast / faster on your CPU. If you want more clarity, you need a higher bitrate. Not really sure what you're doing that is causing the options to be ignored, but in general changing the preset has the least effect on image quality and you shouldn't really be changing it.

Well I'm kinda new to all this..so I have no idea on what things should do :D

I'll provide a session from twitch tomorrow to show you how it handles dota with dxtory and all the settings I'm currently using

*Update* I found the log from earlier today..I was running the program as administrator but it seems when I tried switching everything around..though it said it did on the program it didn't really? Idk..but here's part of today's log..hope it helps

Oh and It only shows 4gb memory because I'm using 4gb for ramdisk

Can you try the setting below and post your recorded video.

Bitrate/Buffer: 2000/1000
FPS: 60
Quality: 8
Preset: veryfast
Keep your resolution and audio settings.

Looks good to me. You might want to turn on the send buffer, it could help increase bandwidth efficiency, but you aren't dropping frames so it might not make much difference.

Man, I wish I had a rig which is as powerful as yours. Your stream looks too good. Well, glad I helped you out.

Thanks for the help so far, I'll be doing more tests with the nightly builds, and what should my send buffer be, anyone have any ideas?

download a program called SG TCP Optimizer. look for a value called MTU. subtract 40 from that value then multiply it by 4 or 8 or 16 or 24 depending the kind of delay you can handle

where 16 doesn't mean 16 seconds

this is an example.

I have an MTU of 1480 then i subtract 40 = 1440 multiply it by 16 = 23040 that's it this is a great value to use.

You want the send buffer to buffer maximum packet sizes while not being too bursty - a single MSS is enough (1460). Buffering too much can make your games lag since the data stream will be a lot burstier.

I'm doing test #3 right now, but idk how to keep it this clear but make it as smooth as my game, any ideas?

http://www.twitch.tv/wingsltd#

I'll be streaming and checking in here randomly between 1-5 cst..may stream later than that. Current settings are same as stated in previous post

Idk why the video keeps lagging though..so I'm waiting to see if someone knows why

It would appear you are dropping frames. A very high number in fact. You may have to turn down your bitrate a bit to ensure that it doesn't happen anymore. It will cause your stream to be less smooth and/or more pixellated.

Rather than start a new thead, I found this one. Thanks Jim for making a quality program but the time has come again for new setting help! I think i can make a flawless stream now without the aid of a capture card and need settings recommendations..I want to be able to play fps or whatever without quality drop like someone who's using the aver live gamer hd card..let's see if that is possible!

As always..I use 1000/1500 for the upload settings! What's everyone think i should have it set to for hq streaming? :D

If you really have the Upload linked in your OP you could go with 2000/2000 or maaaaybe get away with 2500/2500 which isnt that much, what do i mean by "really have the upload" ? Simple: dont test with Speedtest since it doesnt skip the powerboost most ISPs like to apply to you upload for a short time, try testmy.net (set your region at the top and do the 33mb upload test) or use http://measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools#tool5 the shaperprobe to see if you get traffic shaping in any form (bad!). So if you really have the 3+ upload try 2500/2500 720p 30fps with either game capture or since you have windows 8 monitor capture which is REALLY good on win8.
Stay with veryfast as preset at first and see if you have enough CPU power to spare and try bumping it up to faster or fast, just keep an eye on your cpu usage while streaming - especially in high motion situations.

If you lag or drop frames with 2500/2500 drop it down to 2000/2000. 60fps with such low upload probably would look a bit worse even. Dont even think about 1080p with this upload, it will look ugly.
Quality balance you should start with 5-7 for FPS and look at your vod and high motion scenes, higher isnt BETTER in this case.

Remember for monitor capture you need to run the game in window mode or fullscreen windowed. For gamecapture it doesnt matter.

Thanks, I'm preforming the upload tests now, and I was looking for what I should have everything set for with the new cpu. :D

Alright so after doing the 33mb upload test it's stating that I have 3.9 Mbps upload
