Question / Help Streaming CS:GO

relinquish

Hello,

Right I've been streaming for a while now, on and off not really one of those hardcore streamers, I would eventually like to be one of them though. I am looking to Stream Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, for those who aren't aware it's a FPS game.

The problem I have is for starts I don't know what settings to use on OBS, I'm not sure if the Max Bitrate / Buffer Size is sufficient, or if I need to lower it.

My PC Specs are....

CPU: Intel i5 2500k @ 4.1GHz
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
GPU: XFX ATi Radeon 7950

I'm sure that's all you really need to know, as I can't find the other stuff out at this current moment of time.

Now my internet to me is the issue, some of use might be on VirginMedia and are aware they give out caps like no tomorrow, I'm currently on the 60MB package, which gives me roughly around 60MB download and anywhere between 2 - 3MB upload. I share my connection with 3 other gamers, including myself 3 of us are playing CS:GO and the other person is using there xbox.

Now I don't know what to set my settings at to compensate for a shared connection, but also to ensure I don't get capped by VirginMedia but also get the best quality I can possibly get.

Currently I am running at 1275kbit/s, everything looks nice but I'm not sure if this amount will go over the limit, as I haven't streamed for longer than 1 hour yet.

Please if anyone can help me out here it would be much appreciated, I want to be able to stream more often whilst others are using the internet, looking on purchasing a capture card after Christmas and maybe upgrading my CPU to and i7 of some sort.

P.S If it helps you give me a more accurate bit rate to use, here are my thresholds given by VirginMedia http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-manag ... holds.html

Also here is my OBS Logs: http://pastebin.com/PTALdidC

For a 1275kbps bit rate, I recommend streaming at 480p30. I would suggest dropping the x264 preset to faster, but I know CS:GO players are pretty sensitive about their frame rates, so I doubt that will work well. But you're welcome to try it.

At 1275kbps, on average, that will consume ~573MB of upload bandwidth in an hour. Combined with gaming, as well as other use of the internet connection, it's very possible that you could go over the limit. You'll have to experiment.

If you want to know how much data a given bit rate will use, then use this formula:

((my average bit rate in kbps) / 8000) * 3600 = amount of data used in 1 hour in MB

since you got over 2,5mbit upload you could try 720@30 with a 2k bitrate and see how it goes pingwise and also if your cpu can handle it

Hello Dodgepong,

You seem like you know what your talking about! So I have taken into consideration what you have said, and the question I now have in mind is what is the least amount of upload one can simply have in order to stream? Obviously quality plays a big role whilst streaming, so I would ideally want to use the least amount of upload, but get the best quality possible quality out of it, I know I will have to sacrifice a lot in terms of quality.

I was thinking about 500kbps - 700 kbps

700 Kbps recommended by OBS:

Recommended max bitrate: 595
Recommended buffer size: 357

500 Kbps recommended by OBS:

Recommended max bitrate: 425
Recommended buffer size: 255

Would any of them be sufficient?

You can stream below 1k bit rate, but you just have to accept ahead of time that it won't look great. 700kbps might be more reasonable, and could do a passable 360p stream. Maybe even 480p, if you want to try it. It will take some experimenting and subjective assessment.
