Streaming audio trouble between scenes, confusion with global settings

My main scene works when the audio settings are set to default, but my pre-screen is outputting people's mic audio, including mine.
I don't have any sources for mic audio in my pre-screen at all. So I switched global audio off as per a suggestion from another forum post, which solved the issue for my pre-screen. However, now in my main scene, no audio works. I can input my mic, and that works fine as a source, but then my computer audio won't come through. If I do select both my mic and computer audio output as a source, then I get mad delay and infinite echo...

I'm just a bit confused here. Can anybody help me out?

You did the right thing to remove devices from global audio sources and instead add them as audio source directly to the scenes where you want them to appear.

To avoid the echo from your desktop audio, make sure monitoring of your desktop audio source is off. Also, make sure Settings > Audio > Advanced > Monitoring device isn't set to "default" or to your desktop audio source. This device is where monitoring is going to, and if you monitor your desktop audio to your desktop audio, it will be a feedback loop. OBS will try to avoid this by deactivating monitoring internally if it detect such a loop, but doesn't always get it right, so it's best if you explicitly either set monitoring off or set a monitoring device to a headset you're not capturing.
