Question / Help Strange White Noise / Static Issue

I'll add more details if needed but wanted to see if someone might know a quick fix to the following issue.

I have a line out of a digital mixer going into my sound card (mic input). This input is the ONLY recording input enabled on the PC. Here's the issue: Even with the channel muted from the mixer (aka. no ACTUAL sound entering the PC), there's still a strange static / interference in OBS.

Listen to the following link...

Again, the static you're hearing is occurring even though the audio source is muted. There shouldn't be any noise at all. Any advice?

More on what Narco is talking about.

The Microphone port on your soundcard is for mic level devices. Windows changes the volume slider behaviors for mic ports by giving them gain and gain boosting controls.

Line In ports are for line level devices, such as your mixer. The volume control is an attenuation slider, much like any other volume control it goes from 0-100%.
100% volume on a Line In recording device means what is coming out of the mixer is exactly the level(roughly) that will be recorded in windows, also known as Unity gain.

If you plug a mixer into the Mic in port, it will gain boost the output of the mixer, causing it to distort, it also gain boosts your noise floor. No matter how you slice it it is an unbalanced connection so you will be prone to EM interference.

If after plugging into the Line in you still find you are getting static or humming you can try a 3.5mm noise isolator
