Question / Help Static Sound with no Mic

Hi there,

I have been fighting this issue for months and have searched high and low without finding anything that worked.

When I run OBS, I'll do a preview (same happens while recording or streaming) and when I check the noise gate level, there is a constant noise that happens from the "mic" side of the sound that does not go away when I mute every single microphone, or even when I unplug the mics altogether. The noise does not show in Adobe Audition or anywhere else. I have even disabled every audio input device and used a USB mic but the noise was still there (trying to eliminate the question as to whether it is the onboard soundcard or not). Whenever a mic input is selected in OBS, this baseline noise will show up no matter what.

Any suggestions would be fantastic, I'm willing to try anything. This has happened since I started using OBS.

It could be dirty power in your PSU (or even the motherboard can do this) since this happens even on USB mic. I had this happen on a headset which was just powered by USB. I used a wall-wart adapter to power and the noise went away.

I'm not saying this is it, but something to look into.

Wouldn't this cause issues with all programs then? In audition, the mic is flatlining at zero, but in OBS there's atleast 10-15db fluttering when no sound is going in.

Can you post your logfile please?

Virtual Audio Cable! Yeah, this happens with or without that. I only installed that recently to try and fix the issue. I will check the frequency settings when I get home, though.

If you have front end mic header plugged into your motherboard to the front of the case, I would caution where it is wired.

Something tells me your raw sound has issues yet audition is able to remove prior to processing.

That being said, if you cannot fix the issue after you check the mic header on the motherboard, I would try this https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/microphone-dsp-plugin.127/ but tbh, fix the issue first! you'll have better quality in the end.
