Question / Help Starting output failed error

I know a lot of people have posted about this error before. I've done my homework and dug through these forums trying every suggestion I could find but have had no results. I've run the set up wizard and it, as a default, set my settings to NVENC H.264 and that's when I get the message that the stream failed to start. I've made sure the graphics drivers are up to date, and set the Nvidia control panel to force OBS to run on the GPU but yet the problem remains. I admit my computer is a bit older and is not the best for streaming but it should be able to work if I can just lighten the load on my CPU a bit. Is there anything else I can try or anything I've overlooked?

Your graphics chip (NVIDIA GeForce 840M) doesn't contain a nvenc circuit. For mobile GPUs, only the GTX ones contain nvenc. But you are probably able to use Quicksync (QSV) as hardware encoder. That's the encoder on the Intel iGPU.

I'll give that a try and report back in a few hours.

That does work somewhat, but it's not as effective as I was hoping for. Is there anything else I can do to reduce the strain on my CPU from OBS?

Bitrate has minimal effect on processing cycles.

Your best bet is to be very frugal with scene sources. Get rid of extraneous game captures. Also, try reducing your canvas size down to your ouput -- the more your iGPU has to render, the more resources it's having to share with the rest of the CPU. The iGPU is not a discrete system, so this does have a slight effect on performance.
