installed/updated OBS on laptop W7 (ATI graphics correctly identified) , adjusted settings to File Output Only (edit first, upload later)

in the preview window:
Not streaming
Click "Start Streaming", "Start Recording", or "Preview Stream" to begin

in Sources I have Monitor Capture selected
no matter what I do/try: Start Streaming greyed out; Preview Stream is black
I can Start Recording, but the file created is, of course, nothing but black!

when I add and select screen ino Sources, Preview Stream is Screen in Screen in Screen etc.
no matter what I do/try: Start Streaming still greyed out, I can Record and it is, of course, nothing but Screen in Screen in Screen etc.!

what am I missing/doing wrong?

all I want to do is record what is going on on the screen!!

thx for any input

if you are local recording only there is no reason to stream. to enable stream you have to enter info into the stream setting in options, which you dont need to local record.

preview will be screen in screen in screen because you are capturing your screen to which OBS is open on with a preview screen.

honestly it sounds like you need to read through a bunch of how-tos to understand all that you are doing. all the pieces are here, you just need to figure out the puzzle. post a link to your last log that is under the help menu and copy the link here so we may see your settings.
