Sound not recording unless monitoring is on

Hi everyone. I have my mic and game audio on two different tracks, both tracks enabled. But my mic audio will only record if the 'Monitor and output' option is selected. If 'monitoring off' is selected then there isnt any mic sound on the recording, yet i still see it registering in OBS. Its just a bit off putting having your own voice in your ear constantly while trying to record. If this is how it should be then apologies for the post, its just a bit off putting having your own voice in your ear constantly. Thanks!

Let me guess: Your game audio is actually a global Desktop source or a scene-specific Audio Output Capture, and you send the Monitor to the same device.

If that's true, then the Desktop or Output source also picks up the Monitor, because it really is capturing the literal *output* of the selected device.

Then your player is only giving you Track 1. The tracks don't mix. You select one at a time to hear, by itself, if your player even allows that.

So if you have the Desktop or Output source going to Track 1 and the Mic going to Track 2, and you're only listening to Track 1, then it'll do exactly as you describe.

If you want to hear everything at the same time, you need to put it all on the same track. Probably Track 1. Then you can use the other 5 tracks to separate things out for later, if you still want that.

Thanks for the reply, apologies if its a basic question. I did do a brief search of the forum before posting but i couldn't find my issue.

Putting the two into the same track did the trick, thank you. I just followed various tutorials to get my head around the software initially.
Will it be possible to separate the two into separate tracks further down the line for editing? And if i can't separate the mic audio from the desktop audio, where do the 5 other tracks come into play?

Thanks a lot for your help, it is appreciated

You can't unmix. That's part of basic physics, not a software decision. So if you want them separate later, you have to keep them separate through the entire process.

A lot of people use the tracks for that. Track 1 is a complete live soundtrack, and the other 5 are individual things. Record all 6, and have your video editor pick out and remix the 5 individual ones.
