SOUND Monitor On

So I have been streaming for a few months. On my live shows I have been given suggestions from the audience that I should use sound effects. I've watched videos on how to add sound effects to my OBS set up. It basically has me clicking the little "eye" in the sources pane to activate and inactivate the sound source. It seems to work the first time, but never after. Also, I'd like to hear these sound effects through my headphones. I also looked that up and went into advanced audio settings and turn on the "monitor and output". I can't hear anything. Ugh,,,anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks for any insight in advance.

Hey, I'm on a Mac and the best solution I have found is to use a player like VLC, which has assignable audio outputs. Just make a playlist with all your sound effects, and then set the audio output to a virtual audio channel. I use SWB Audio which is free. Then in OBS just add the SWB audio input to your global audio devices (like Mic/Aux 2). Then it will appear in your audio mixer no matter what scene is up. Just keep the VLC playlist window open on the side and double click an audio SFX whenever you need it! Super easy and works.
