Question / Help Something is wrong with my OBS?

I've had the free OBS.0.16.5 since the beginning of Nov, I recorded my PC gameplay and was very happy with the results no choppy stuttering, (for lack of better term) I stopped recording mid Nov and began searching for a free editing program eventually landing with Lightworks near the beginning of Dec. During the recording lapse I also upgraded my comp with an SSD drive and another 8gb of DDR3. Figuring it would improve everything all around.

Over 2 weeks I figured out how to edit a couple clips that came out decent for a novice and decided to re-record some of the game because I had improved on the gameplay. This morning I began a short recording session with OBS then stopped, closed the game and prog down to review the recording. It was horrible, all choppy, stop and go and possibly missing frames.
What the heck? I deleted and tried again same thing, I then moved the destination folder to another drive, same results Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

C-Dude,
If "Log File" is something existing on the OBS program, I'll have to get back to you, I deleted 0.16.5 close to 30mins ago and D/L'd the 0.16.6 version and haven't installed it yet. When I do get it running I'll try another recording and then search for the "Log File" in "Help"

I hope I did this right and thanks in advance for whatever you can do. I installed the 0.16.6 vers, I don't recall having the option to run 32bit or 64bit with 0.16.5. and don't recall ever seeing it on the program like I do now. Should I have used the 32bit instead? my OS has been win7 64 since 2012. I also noted that there is a zip file on the OBS site, I thought it would also have the installer but doesn't, what do I do with it?

The zip file is just a different way of installing it. The 64 bit version has been around for a long time to my knowledge. You should always use the 64 bit version since your cpu is 64 bit.

You need to have a recording/streaming session in your log. Could you upload another log with a recording in it. Just open OBS record/stream for a few minutes then stop and then upload the log. Thanks.

This is the latest log, about 3+ mins of recorded gameplay, I've always used WMP to review the OBS recordings and they always ran fine. The recorded material looks even worse than it does while playing, also this recording had no sound
P.S. I screwed the pooch on the sound part, I had it set to Realtek digital output instead of speakers

18:00:23.179: Output 'simple_file_output': Number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 5940 (38.1%)
18:00:23.179: Output 'simple_file_output': Number of lagged frames due to rendering lag/stalls: 2293 (14.7%)

The problem is that your computer is not powerful enough for the settings your using.

If you are using CRF you should really set your cpu preset to ultrafast to avoid getting insane lag.
you shouldn't notice much of a quality decrease but if you do then just lower the crf number.

Unrelated:

Also you should note that you are recording your videos at 1120x700. Which is slightly lower than 720p
In OBS studio you can manually enter in resolutions to scale to which means you can record to normal 720p (1280x720) or if you don't want to distort your videos record them at a 16:10 equivilent. (either 1280x800, or 1152x720) Im pretty sure youtube uses 1152x720.

There are lots of other things you can do to record videos to the 16:9 standard on a 16:10 monitor without distorting or cutting off, if your interested just message me back I'll be glad to help.

C-Dude,
So, I don't know if this will be any help to you, but late Nov I up-graded my sys with an SSD and doubled ram to 16gb ddr3.
I've been experiencing anomalies, a couple of which in sys info and msconfig changed info on the CPU, i5-2550k is a 4 core processor and the data said it was a single core. I don't know if it has anything to do with the SSD or ram, or the Samsung SSD management software.

Anyway more and more anomalies, so I switched back to the 1tb HDD, and all the info is now reading correctly. I ran an OBS recording session with HL2 and so far everything appears to be back to normal little to no stutter, (pre SSD/ram change).

I can provide you with another log if a comparison would be helpful.

I don't know what or where those options are in settings or what crf is, I thought it was set at 1680x1050 the native monitor resolution, my VC has no problem with 1080, however, I would like to get as much help as possible with the OBS program. My agenda is to exhibit my gameplay for the Half Life2 games that no one else is doing, considered or spent the time figuring out, and no cheats.

PLease and thankyou in advance

I re-looked at your log and it appears I have made a mistake.

You need to set your CPU usage preset to 'Ultrafast' currently you have it on 'Veryfast'

CRF is the rate control, it stands for constant rate factor, basically it controls the quality of the file. 0 is lossless, 51 is worst quality. Unlike CBR or VBR, CRF does not aim to record at a specified bitrate, instead it records at a certain quality using as much bitrate as it needs to achieve the quality. (read more about CRF here)

Basically setting your CPU preset to Veryfast, your CPU was trying to compress the video a lot while recording, which is unnecessary while using CRF because it uses as much bitrate as it needs anyway, and compressing at that bitrate would require insane amounts of CPU power. Setting to Ultrafast lets your CPU run fast.

But this only seems to be half the issue, your i5-2550K is only showing up with 2 cores 2 threads

17:55:04.073: Physical Cores: 2, Logical Cores: 2

It should have 4 of each. And you said that it was only showing up with 1 core. Clearly something here is messed up, and I'm not sure what the problem is.
If it was working fine before you put an SSD and additional RAM into your rig, then my guess would be that the RAM is causing some issue, although I have no clue how.

Still weird issue, neither of these should cause cores not to show up. Try putting the SSD back in (still using old RAM) and see if it still works.

As I mentioned in post #8 this thread I reinstalled the 1tb hdd and both sys info and msconfig/boot/advanced info now shows 4 core. another thing I noticed in bios/advanced/AITweak, when I 1st installed the extra ram I had to change the ram data to (XMP) from (manual) to accommodate. when I reinstalled the 1tb hdd the ram option reverted back to manual in bios.

While the record session I did today was much improved over the runs with the SSD there was still a little stagger here and there. So I took another log file. I'm wondering if the new ram is causing the problem. I 1st set it to auto and the results were a little better but not much, so manual provides a smoother recording.

This log shows 4 cores

I would still like to know where I would find crf or to make the cpu change you suggest, I can't find it in any of the 7 OBS settings menu options, general/stream/output/audio/video/hotkeys/advanced

Incomplete log :(

crf:

crf 23 is standard.
crf 18 with ultrafast will give you good recording without collapsing CPU

EBrito,
OK, my window says Simple, when I go to Advanced/Recording it looks nothing like your window, are you able to combine both (Streaming and Recording) or is it a composite pic?

C-Dude said he would help me with the settings to improve my recording, if these pics help to figure out what I have to change please and thank you.

Here's a new pic of the Advanced menu after switching encoder to x264, it's beginning to look like your pic. Will read your link, so far I've watched a few tutorials and YouTube videos on the basics of recording. I have the in and out title down and dissolve at the end of the clip. However, I discovered a problem after rendering the clip this eve. I watched the rendered clip and discovered it kept going long after the video was finished, there was over 20 mins of blank/black space.
What the heck did I do wrong or forget to do?

I think this is a mistake using your postproduction software.

Check the timeline.

Oh crap, sorry, it was late and I was beat, I was supposed to type that at Lightworks. I'm sure it was something I did or shouldn't have done, the 1st 2 I did came out right.

Did you look at the pic, is there something I can change to improve the program?

It appears C-Dude has retracted his offer to help me.
