So I was thinking about recording some Youtube videos but I wasn't sure if I should use OBS or Fraps? I have had Fraps purchased for a very long time so the expense factor doesn't really affect me at all. If I should use OBS over fraps what settings should I be using? I would like to record at 720p 60fps, I have 8gb of ram, i5-4690, and a GTX 980Ti SC. Thanks for the help.

In my opinion FRAPS is mostly but not entirely obsolete these days. Its great in uncompressed format if the framerate hit isn't too bad, but I found that it didn't play nice with recent games. WoW was the last game I could reliably record with FRAPS without the framerate being completely trashed. I basically stopped trying to record with it after I discovered OBS but I still use FRAPS for screenshots.

The biggest downside to FRAPS results from its upside: lossless recordings. If you demand high quality recordings, it does that, but it also takes up the most hard drive space, way more than OBS is normally set to use. In the non-lossless setting, FRAPS' quality is pretty terrible and the hard drive space saving isn't much over lossless.

FRAPS hasn't been updated since Windows 8 came out, although I haven't checked lately to see if there's a Windows 10 update. OBS has the benefit of being actively developed. I'd say you should use OBS for sure. With your GTX980Ti, you can use NVEnc encoding for very good results without a CPU hit.

Here's a guide to getting high quality local recordings:

Instead of using x264 encoding, use NVEnc, and instead of the x264 CRF setting, set your bitrate to something in the 20,000 to 50,000 range (I typically do 20000 or 30000).
