Question / Help [SOLVED] OBS Studio Game Capture Gives Black Screen

Hello!

I'm trying to get game capture to work with Sea of Thieves. I know it works with display capture but i've heard that game capture is much smoother for streaming. Unfortunaly when i select game capture all i get is a black screen. I've tried to launch it in compatibility mode for win 7, launched as admin, no compatibility mode at all and just admin, not admin, alt tabbing, launching OBS first then game, exiting OBS and restarting it while in-game and vice versa with the game itself and double clicking the "eye" to enable and disable game capture in the source options, to be honest, everything i come up with.

I'm running out of ideas here, I have asked on the Sea of Thieves forum to see if anyone can actually run the game with OBS with game capture, one of the replies were that he/she been running it for three days now without any issues, so if i base my knowledge around that then it should be possible to make it work, hence why i'm turning my head around to this forum for help now.

I'll link a picture, showing that the red box is there on the preview and the log file. I see there are some errors in the log but i'm making no sense out of it. I tried googling the error without any success.

I found a work around to this.

I uninstalled OBS 21.0.1 from my PC. Saved my user settings. Then i saw this after doing some digging.
https://github.com/jp9000/obs-studio/releases/tag/17.0.0

I quote "
OBS Studio 17.0.0

Windows Changes:

  • Added ability to capture windows store games (UWP programs)"
Sea of Thieves being a Windows Store game I decided to download the 17.0.0 version. Installed it on my C drive instead of my D drive because i found a post by Jim that said that also made a difference with permissions or something. At the moment i launched OBS it detected the game with game capture like i wanted. Smooth as silk.

I have no clue how the newest version can't game capture win 10 store games, or maybe it can but why I could not get it running. If someone reads this and have the same issue, try downgrading to 17.0.0 for windows store games and see if it helps, just a workaround, not a fix.

So you installed 21.0.1 in the default program files (x86)\obs-studio location and it did or did not work?

If you're installing to a custom location that isn't in one of the two program files folders, it will NOT work without special permissions.

I checked this and I just saw that the 21.0.1 was not installed in the default obs-studio folder on the C drive since i already had the 17.0.0 there. I did a full uninstall of both 17.0.0 and 21.0.1 from my computer, removed the folders and reinstalled the 21.0.1 on the C drive for the obs-studio location, after that game capture started to work again. So my problem then were that I did not install it properly from the beginning.

Thanks for the help, now this issue is solved!

Same happens to me. Just a black screen, installed in the default location. I've run with admin permissions just in case, and it just records a black screen (but with the cursor, the cursor is the only thing recorded).
This happens in a game source, in a screen source and in a window source.

I'm using Windows 10 with AMD R7 card. Unluckily, in my case it didn't get fixed by downgrading.
