I have tried a bunch of low but decent quality settings and for some reason I am pretty sure my laptop should be able to handle it, when recording I can play games like normal but when I look back over the footage it's really laggy. Does anyone know what settings I should use to record smooth but decent quality gameplay footage on a i7 cpu, geforce gtx 960 graphics card, 16 gb ram laptop (didn't include any other stuff because I think they are the 3 main factors, also the laptop is a lenovo leigon Y700.)

Start with Tools > Auto Configuration Wizard to start.
