Hello!
I'm trying to set up a Blackmagic Ultrastudio Express to record commentated footage from a PS4 to a MacI've tried settings at both 720p and 1080p on both OBS via BlackSyphon and the Blackmagic recording software. All I ever get is a black screen or a green screen in the display window of both applications. How do I need to configure OBS and my PS4 to record?

  1. Make sure you're running the latest drivers available and that your OS is fully up-to-date.
  2. Get it working in the BMD software first, and then apply the same settings in OBS.
  3. The device only supports up to 1080@30p, so that means you'll have to set your PS4 to 720p
  4. Set the frame rate in OBS/the BMD Software to 59.94, and NOT 60.
  5. Why are you trying to use BlackSyphon? Add the device directly into OBS and confirm that it works there before adding another layer of redirection.
  6. The device isn't multi-client friendly (at least in Windows), so you'll want to close the BMD software before opening OBS. That means not just closing the interface, but also going to the Apple menu and making sure it's closed there.

I don't get it.
I updated my OS and both apps.
I changed all the settings to 720p59.94, with the PS4 set to 720p.
I added the device in OBS as a Blackmagic device, rather than game capture with Black Syphon.

Still nothing but a black screen in both apps.
Though I've noticed something strange throughout this whole process. Even before I followed your directions, in the Blackmagic Desktop Video Utility, there is no reading under Video Input, even though I have HDMI running from my PS4 to the UltraStudio. Video output reads 720p59.94 under HDMI just fine. I don't think it's my HDMI cable, because it worked just fine with my old Elgato card.

In my post step #2 is that you need to "Get it working in the BMD software first, and then apply the same settings in OBS."

If HDCP is turned on, the BMD will get no picture from the PS4. Also double check that your PS4 is set to 720p. If it is, in the BMD software try different frame rates, but in my experience, it'll only work at 59.94p.

Also maybe you have the HDMI cable plugged into the wrong port?

Lastly, is the PS4 plugged directly into the BMD device? Or do you have something inbetween them?
