System: Mac Studio M4 Max 36GB — macOS Tahoe 26 — LG HDR 4K external display @ 3008x1692

OBS last version

Problem: Recording is stuttering/laggy regardless of settings. Tried both Display Capture and Window Capture with macOS Screen Capture source. Encoder set to Apple VT H264 Hardware, output 1920x1080 @ 60fps. Base canvas 6016x3384 (Studio Display native). Frame drops and stuttering persist.


Note: QuickTime Player records the screen smoothly on the same machine with no issues, suggesting the problem is OBS + ScreenCaptureKit on Tahoe.

Why is your canvas so large? You don't need it to be the size of the display (and you're doubling that?) if you're only outputting 1080p. You're upscaling from 1080p to 6K then back to 1080p, on an encoder that isn't optimized for such high resolutions. If there's some reason you need to do that, at least change the encoder to HEVC, which is meant to handle 4K and 8K video. (HEVC is h.265, not sure why OBS uses the number for one and the acronym for the other),
