Question / Help SC-512N1-L/DVI - Stupid? Question

Alright guys, I have a possibly stupid question.

I'm looking at the SC-512N1-L/DVI capture card. I currently have a 144Hz monitor using Displayport but will switch to DVI to use that card with a DVI splitter.

I have a second PC to record with my main system while gaming using that card, now I was reading somewhere that the card can capture audio over DVI? unless I'm missing something that can't be possible correct? I know I can do it with HDMI.

Also that setup should work right? recording game, audio and mic from a second PC with HDMI if I have too

Thanks for the help guys.

Bump? Also could somebody post some OBS screen shots of the card in action? it would help a lot.

Much appreciated

Yes, DVI supports audio. Your graphics card would need to support it, and you'd need to use it as the audio device/pass audio through it somehow.

I've got 2 GTX 980's so I'm going to assume they would. That was kind of another question, if I use DVI passthrough on the card or a splitter could OBS still record in game and mic audio?

You would need to pass the mic to the capture card separately, but as long as your audio hardware has some sort of "Stereo Mix" or "What U Hear" recording device that's fairly easy. Are you sure the SC-512N1-L/DVI will accept a 144Hz signal?

Ok, yeah I've got "Stereo Mix" and I believe I can recreate an audio device.. just can't remember the name of the program. It does 1080/60 so I'm going to assume not. If it comes down to using HDMI that might just have to do. I'm still stuck on if I should buy the card or not. It's on sale and I want to get away from software screen capturing. So any other help/info would be helpful from anyone

You can't do 1080p120 without a dual link DVI connection (or displayport). I've actually pushed a single link DVI up to about 105Hz before without any visual defects, but it wouldn't go much beyond that. So from that standpoint alone, you won't be able to do 144Hz on that capture card.

Not sure what your "good price" is, but for about $300 USD you can get a Magewell capture card that is superior to that one. I just checked Ebay but didn't see any good deals on the capture cards I'm familiar with.

Some googling seems to indicate that DVI carries audio but most DVI cables don't, so the solution people have been using is to use an HDMI cable with the applicable adapters to do HDMI > DVI or vice versa.

Yeah I've sort of come to terms of if I have to use HDMI then so be it. I can get the card for $200 most other cards I've seen are $300-400+. What Magewell cards were you looking at?.

Edit** If you're looking for cap cards on eBay, please use ebay.ca ...lol

If you can get the SC-512N1-L/DVI for $200 Canadian then that seems like a decent deal. Barring an ebay deal, but the deals that I sometimes see aren't there right now.

Are there any other specific models you would recommend I keep an eye out for? like the Magewell card?

I use one of these: http://datapath.co.uk/video-capture-cards . They've appeared on ebay for as low as US$99 at times in the past year or so. They can do 1080p60, but the models I've seen cheap on Ebay don't do audio, so you'd have to route that separately. Their list price is quite expensive, but they're crazy adaptable. They'll do any framerate or resolution you can think of that will fit on a single-link DVI, whereas nearly every other consumer video capture card can only do a few canned resolutions and framerates.

I've heard good things about Datapath as well but usually very expensive from what I've seen. What model (s) do you recommend.. (nothing in the link) cards with passthrough may be helpful but not necessary

Thanks for the help..
