Question / Help Save to File at Full Resolution

Perhaps I'm missing an option that's readily staring me in the face, but I couldn't figure out if this is possible. I stream a 1080p screen down-res'd to 720p at a 2000 bitrate. For certain streams, I also record locally via the "Save to File" option to later upload to YouTube. Is it possible to save the local recording at a higher resolution and bitrate? I'd like to save the local recording at something like 1080p and a much higher bitrate. I understand that YouTube will normalize the quality when it's uploaded, but starting with better source is always a good thing.

If anyone has any ideas on how to achieve this, I'd appreciate it.

You cannot save to disk and stream to the internet at different resolutions/bitrates/framerates. The save to the disk will be the exact same as your stream.

The workaround is to run two instances of OBS at the same time, configuring each individually for one of the two tasks. This may be a problem if you use Game Capture, as I'm unsure if OBS can hook the game twice. It also uses potentially twice the CPU, because each OBS instance needs to do its own encoding. A forum search, if you're still interested after learning all these drawbacks, will turn up more specific instructions.

The OBS re-write will eventually allow OBS to save to disk and stream at different settings. No one really knows when the re-write will be ready though, the devs here are working on it.

I had done a search, but only came up with a post from 2013 (poor search terms, maybe?) referring to the "-multi" switch and running two instances. It was also said that it wouldn't matter soon with the re-write. I wasn't sure if that had occurred yet or not, so I figured I'd create a new thread.

As far as CPU usage from running two instances of OBS, I'm not at all worried about that. The only gameplay that I save locally and upload to YouTube is tabletop D&D. As such, I pretty much have all the CPU power in the world available at the time and am using window region capture.

If this becomes an option in a future re-write, that'd be great. If not, I can live with multiple instances
