Use the export and import functionality in the Profile and Scene collection menus instead of directly mess with the files in %appdata%.
That means: as backup, export your profile(s) or your scene collection(s), and to restore import the created file.
You can also create copies of the current profile and scene collection and work on the copies. This way the old state is still available for review and you do your experiments in a copy.
