sample rate causes loss of audio

I just had a strange experience - I could see audio from media sources in the meters, but nothing was output. It was recorded, but never sent to my monitoring device, even though Monitor & Output was enabled.

All the usual suspects were fine (monitoring device set, no reuse, no feedback). This persisted over reloads, nothing would fix it.

Then I changed the project sample rate from 48k to 44.1k -> restart = sound!
Then changed it back to 48k = still sound.

Very strange. Anybody seen this before, where something in the monitoring pipe seems to get stuck until the sample rate is (temporarily) changed?
