Question / Help Recordings not 'finalizing' sometimes.

This is an annoying problem that occurs from time to time; recordings just will not finalize. Meaning the recording is next to useless, this is especially annoying when attempting to record multi-hour streams and then it just fails to finalize.

Is there a reason this happens?

Record to FLV or MKV. If you record to MP4 and OBS crashes or is otherwise interrupted, the file will be corrupted and unrecoverable. If you require MP4 files for some other purpose like editing, remux them afterwards. OBS Studio users select File > Remux Recordings. It's not crashing though, thats the thing.

I click 'Stop Recording' and occasionally it just won't finalize.

Whether it crashes or experiences some other type of problem that prevents the MP4 from being finalized, you should use a container format that doesn't suffer from this issue.

Is FLV only available in Studio or newer versions?

I'm using a kind low power laptop and kinda scared to upgrade in case neither work optimally on my laptop. lol

FLV is available in OBS Classic; both FLV and MKV are available in OBS Studio.

This might sound stupid, but where is the option to toggle between mp4 / vlc? had a quick browse through all the tabs and can't seem to find it, unless it's only in the last few releases?

In OBS Classic you just change the file extension to .flv instead of .mp4 under Settings > Broadcast Settings > File Output. In OBS Studio you're looking for the Recording Format dropdown box under Settings > Output.
