Question / Help Recording to disc whilst streaming?

Hi broadcasters,

I was wondering if it would be possible to stream whilst recording to local HDD? I stream to twitch in HD but find that when I either export the video to YouTube or download the Twitch stream to edit Adobe, the quality really suffers. Ideally I would just record to HDD and then edit from there, but there are a lot of people who like to watch the stream! So I'm kinda stuck in that I want to stream for people to watch but I also want to record great quality raw footage to edit later.

Any thoughts?

Settings > Broadcast Settings > Check "Automatically save stream to file" and set a path and file name for the output. Use % for the file name to have OBS generate the name based on the date/time.

Unfortunately the same encoding technique is used for both the save to disk and the stream to Twitch. So while what Sapiens mentions will eliminate any dropped packets and the need for you to download your stream again, it won't do a lot to fix overall quality (unless your upload to Twitch is particularly bad).

If you have a strong enough computer, it may be possible to save a local copy at a higher bitrate and resolution than what you send to Twitch, by running two instances of OBS at the same time. But if your computer is only marginally able to stream, this probably won't help. A search of these forums should yield more information. An OBS log file can help us determine if your computer is up to the task.
