The resulting recording was 50+ minutes of black silence.

Is it....a problem with settings....a problem with my system....or does OBS simply not play nice with some games?

I remember, back when Windows XP was current, that neither the built-in still-image screenshot nor a third-party video screen capture would capture everything. (WinXP didn't have native video screen capture) YouTube, for example, would capture as a perfectly-rendered webpage with a black rectangle where the video clearly was on the physical monitor. As if it only captured what it was sending *to* the graphics card, but not what the graphics card itself drew on top of that.

I imagine that modern systems work somewhat similarly, with the graphics card drawing directly on the screen, but I thought that the capture method had been updated to include that too.

At any rate, a second PC and a physical capture card should fix it...but then you'd need a second PC and a capture card!

Is Windows' DVR interfering with OBS? Even if Windows isn't actually recording? Up until very recently, video sources were exclusive for performance reasons. Maybe yours still is?

I have no idea what that is....does it come (default) with Win 10, or is it something that'd have to be downloaded?

Either way, I can guarantee I've never touched that.

It comes with Windows, and it's buried in the settings. So most people have probably never touched it, and they're fine. Doesn't completely rule out a problem for you though. There could be an "automatic switch" of some kind that makes it exclusive or not, based on what performance it thinks it sees. Whether that performance measurement is accurate at all is anyone's guess: it *is* Windoze after all. ;-)

Microsoft has been trying to unify stuff for a while now. Win8 had "tablet mode", which was supposed to be a touchscreen-only interface, and the DVR and Game Mode are supposed to bring some XBOX-y things into standard Windows...including corporate office machines! In my poking through the settings ('cause I do that), I think they intended for Windows itself to cover the basic "game+mic" streaming setup. But if you do anything more than just that, it falls flat on its face like it's known for. Even if that *is* all you're doing, it's still better to start with OBS and have room to grow.

I don't remember exactly where that setting is anymore, nor do I have a Windows PC anymore to look it up again. It insistently refused a major update, and everything that Google came up with to try didn't work, so I'm back to 100% Linux again. (never allow an out-of-date computer on the internet, unless its sole purpose is to update NOW, and you manually tell it so - being out-of-date is asking to get hacked)

Sooo....this DVR thing sees something very specific, and tries to take control from OBS (which is what I'm trying to use)?

This recording-nothing HAS to be a game problem, it records most of my game-play just fine.

****EDIT****

I figured it out. The ones causing problems weren't being played in full-screen.
Good grief, I feel silly.

No, I was thinking that it's the first to claim access to a particular video source, in this case the screen capture, and doesn't let go, so that anything else that wants it can't have it. The DVR starts with Windows, so of course it's first, and when OBS starts later, it's already claimed. What you described is usually how that sort of problem shows itself: the second and all others to claim it show black, only the first to claim gets the actual picture.

Things are starting to move away from that now, so that multiple things can use the same source, but it's still a new enough change that any given system could be either way.

I don't know why that would fix it, but okay. Glad you got it.

Of the three capture modes for game capture, Capture foreground window using hotkey is the most reliable at capturing games, regardless of fullscreen state.

Games that run in "Borderless windowed" do not trigger the "capture any fullscreen application" mode.
