Record mouse cursor over video source

Hallo all!

I'm stuck with a problem for a lecture video. I'm showing a short video inside my lecture recording and would like to show/highlight some details of what was shown there. Some souces have an option to show the cursor, e.g. window capture source. Neither video source or VLC source have this option. I allready tried Window capure with a VLC or a Windows Player window but in either case I can record the cursor but the source remains all black (no video shown in OBS).

Is there any other way to show/record a video in OBS and use the mouse to show something in that video?

Any help is verry much appreciatet!

Im on Win10/x64 with OBS 26.1.1

Right click your Window Capture properties then click on capture method and select "Windows Graphics Capture".

Thank you very much for your quick reply. Unfortunately my organisation is still on Win10 1809 and this feature is only available for versions >1903. So, I can't try it right now but I sent a mail to our admins.

Meanwhile: is there any other method I could try to record a mouse cursor over a running video?

Thanks!

I've been on the latest Windows 10 version for quite a while so I can't test any other method within OBS, at this time. Hope the admins update soon as, if I recall correctly, that version of Windows 10 hit End of life in the last quarter of 2020 and Win10 1909 onwards add a few optimizations that benefit OBS process priority.

There may be a workaround in VLC though, if you still want to use "Window Capture".

In VLC --> Tools --> Preferences --> Video, there's a dropdown menu for "Output", try switching to "Windows GDI Video Output". I can't guarantee it'll work but it's worth a shot.

Your last option is "Display Capture", which adds it's own level of security risk and having to be extra cautious on what you choose to display, specially if it's not your personal machine.

Thanks a lot. You put me to the right path. "Windows GDI Video Output" in VLC does the job for OBS (display the video) but video quality isn't very good. So I tried some of the other options and (at least for me) Direct3D9 gives really good voideo quality AND the video is displayed in OBS. Together with the option "capture cursor" of "windows capure" source I have a working solution.

I really appreciate your support!

Glad I could point in the right direction and hope future lectures carry on without a hitch!
