How can I record my cursor on "images" and "video capture device" scenes?
The "hide cursor over projectors" is NOT checked settings.

Thanks

You can Right-click >> properties >> capture cursor.
If that options is available under the source, turn the cursor capture on and off as you like.

Some conceptual remarks: projector windows are outputs of OBS Studio. A cursor over it can be annoying in some use cases, hence the option to hide it, but it won't in any way get the cursor recorded. Just as moving your cursor over a YouTube video won't get it recorded into that video.

In order to get your cursor recorded or streamed, you will have to get it into your scene in OBS. So one of the sources needs to capture the cursor. Some source types do have that Capture Cursor setting, like Display Capture and Window Capture where you will get everything happening within that window. But images and video capture devices do not, since there's no cursor natively over a webcam.

To "just capture a cursor" you will need some 3rd party tool, although I do not know them. Another way might be to have the images and video capture's output shown on your screen and have a Window Capture or Display Capture to record it.... with the cursor. The graphical quality might be a little less, depending on the available monitor screen for that. Also be aware about the captured window/display's dimensions in relation to your output screen.

Thanks. This makes total sense; however while I was able to record my cursor on display capture, it did not record on window capture - though capture cursor was checked.

That said, I need guidance in moving forward. Could you explain - or refer me to a video or document - how I can 1) simply record only the photo as I use the cursor and 2) in another scene record the same photo and cursor with my webcam showing me as the teacher (without the cursor of course).

Thanks so much for your assistance,

Not recording the cursor: please have a look at the Window Capture source's properties, have Capture Method set to Windows 10 (1930 and up). It might also require to check Multi-adapter Compatibility. Experiment with these settings to find what works for this window.

Capture image with cursor
Use seperate software to display the image, ie. IrfanView. This might be most convenient on a separare monitor if available.
monitor with image and cursor.jpg

Now within OBS Studio, create a scene with a Window Capture source. Have it capture the IrfanView window.
laptop with image window capture incl cursor.jpg

When you move the cursor over the IrfanView window, it should be captured.

Image and webcam (without cursor)
Create another scene and add an Image source. Have that to show the desired image as well.
On top op that, add a Video Capture Device and select your camera. You can resize and move it by dragging the handles of the red border.

Final tip: do some test runs before the actual teaching!

You may need to update, especially if you're on a mac. I'm on OBS 30.0.2 now and there's an option to show the cursor in window displays. It wasn't on the older version (I was using 27.something).

If you're on a mac and you update, you need to delete the old window capture and add "Mac OS screen capture", and then the "show cursor" option will appear.
