Question / Help Record 720p or 1080p on MacBook Air?

So the base resolution of the MacBook Air is 1440x900 which is a 16:10 ratio. I would like to post a few videos on Youtube in 720p or 1080p but am having difficulties doing so. I have been playing around with the video settings.

I downloaded SetResX and put it on 1920x1080 and tried inputting that into the base resolution but still doesn't work.

Any advice? Cheers.

Are you able to run the content you're recording at a non-native resolution like 1280x720? That would be ideal. If the source content is 16:10 then having a 16:9 base resolution in OBS will result in black bars. You could stretch the content (breaking its aspect ratio) but doing so looks kind of gross. Upscaling the content to 1080p doesn't really provide any benefit that I can think of, takes a higher bitrate to look good, more CPU power to encode, and would still have the same problem with black bars.

Hmm,maybe you could try putting the base resolution at 1440x900,and then downscale it to 1280x720.Or just put 1280x720 in the base and scaled.(Mine is 1366x768).

You can't downscale to a different aspect ratio.

I was actually going to record the whole screen, but in the future I guess I would be recording some gameplay which I can downscale to 720p. It is interesting that you say that you cannot downscale to a different aspect ratio. I just downloaded the free trial of iShowU Instant and used SetRes X to UPSCALE to 1920x1080 and then recorded and it looked fine. No black bars or anything. I just want to use OBS because it is free, lol. I am assuming that OBS prevents you from downscaling to a different aspect ratio, can you confirm? Thanks for your help.

It's certainly possible to force the content into a different resolution if that's what you want to do, but the downscale options under Settings > Video are meant to be an easy way for users to lower the resolution of their output video without having to understand aspect ratios. If the downscale options listed more than resolutions matching the base resolution's aspect ratio the forums and support chat would be flooded with people complaining that their video is smushed or stretched out or having pillarboxing or letterboxing and we'd all throw ourselves into the sea.

1366x768 and 1280x720 are both 16:9. Sorry if I was unclear, my last post should start with "It's certainly possible to force the content into a different aspect ratio..."
