Question / Help question about resolution

First of all, I want to thank the developers of this great free and open source software

I have installed OBS Studio 19.0.3 on my windows 7 which runs on a laptop with a monitor resolution 1366 x 768

I wanted to know how its possible for OBS Studio to record a 1080p videos on this laptop? I'm a little bit confused

because I think the maximum resolution that a screen recorder software can record at is equal to the resolution of the screen?

is this right? I would be thankful if anybody makes this confusion a little bit clear for me

You can record 1080p video by settings the base resolution & scaled resolution to 1080p, but if you are capturing your monitor, it leaves black borders.
You can get around this by adding background image or something.
