Question / Help Preview looks good, Stream looks terrible

So I know I have something wrong in the settings, but I don't know what.

I tried downscaling from 1920x1080 to 720p and 540p but it just kept giving me a garbled stream that looks like this: http://puu.sh/4wfke.jpg

The preview always looks fine because it is the uncompressed video. As for your output, your bitrate is only marginally decent for 1080p. On the standard presets 1080p kind of requires more bitrate, but it's difficult because many viewers will have issues unless you're one of twitch's partnered streamers. I would probably recommend downscaling to 720p to increase quality in exchange for reduced pixel density. Could also try 864p as well and see how that looks.

Yeah I tried downscaling to 720p and it still looked just as bad, then I tried going down to 540p and that is what the screenshot is from. If I change the resolution it only shows a portion of my stream window.

Jim, you're amazing. I just wanted to tell you that. I had an odd thought and ramped up the bitrate to 8k just to see if it did anything and then turned off the downscaling and it looks much better now with no lag on the system at all. Thank you so much.

I really only set my bitrate because the Twitch guide to setting up OBS claimed 3k-3.5k bitrate was ideal for OBS, clearly that is mistaken information.

You really don't want to use 8000. That's way too high for streaming, and many viewers won't be able to watch your stream because of the amount of bandwidth required. 8000 is something you'd use for a local recording, but not live broadcasting. You can also get in trouble with twitch for doing it.

You really cannot get "perfect" video for streaming, there is always some sacrifice, you have to compress your image so viewers with various internet connection speeds can watch it.

The higher your resolution/fps is, the more bitrate it needs. For recording you can get perfect video, but streaming requires some sacrifice.
