Question / Help Potential OBS Overlay Issue?

I am trying to get a stream started up but have ran into a potential issue. The reason I say potential is because I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to function . Anyway, I have all my overlays positioned properly above my source used to capture, however, when actually entering a game (I have tried four games) the overlays are not on my screen, but they do appear post recording in the video (just not while i record). They also do not appear during a test stream. I kind of need the overlays as i do not have a second monitor. Any ideas? Do they only appear during a live stream? Thanks in advance.
 
So When one is streaming and in game, they will not see overlays? So I cannot use chat overlay to see chat on my screen? If this is the case then I guess I will just use my tablet to look at chat.
 
The person playing the game will not see the overlay, but anyone watching the stream will.
