Question / Help Poor FPS/Video stutter (Local recording)

I recently upgraded my PC to a i5 3750K and Radeon 7970 and thought I might actually be able to record some games for once. I'm recording locally using the settings from R1CH's local recording thread. I've tried an x264 CRF value between 15-20 and despite having 80+ FPS in game it feels like about 10. The game is sluggish and stutters. The finished recording looks perfect with no sign of the stutters, but whilst actually recording it is unplayable.

There's plenty of threads about stutter on stream but most of the solutions haven't had much to do with local recording. If I record lossless everything is fine, is the compression using x264 on the fly too much for my PC?

Make sure you have only ONE capturing method in one scene. Monitor and window capture in same scene with game capture will slow down the performance even if they are unchecked.

Here is my example setting up the scenes:

Not in the latest versions. Unchecked sources are actually destroyed and no longer running. But ONLY in the latest versions.
