Question / Help Pixelation Issue

New Member
Hi, i'm wondering what i can do to improve my stream quality. I have no problems with lag or framerates, at least, 99% of the time. The issue is pixelation, i'm looking for settings, or some good tips to improve the quality. Because in all honesty, i would not watch my stream right now haha.

I'm using Windows 8, so i'm not able to disable Aero. Also i'm aware i changed the preset to faster, more or less the same quality on the default setting. Most of the specs are listed in the log, does my memory needs any boosting? That's all i can think of right now. Anyways, thanks in advance if someone will point me in the right direction :).

Here's the log.

Lower your streaming resolution, increase your bitrate, and/or use a slower preset. Each of these options has a potential drawback. Lowering the stream resolution indirectly lowers the overall clarity of the stream picture, but helps remove compression artifacts and requires less CPU power to encode. Increasing your bitrate can make it harder for some viewers to watch your stream if they can't download from Twitch at the same rate you're uploading. Using a slower preset improves overall stream quality but requires more CPU power; your stream will be choppy if your CPU can't keep up.

There are no magic fixes for stream quality, you're working with a limited set of variables. It's also possible that you simply have unrealistic expectations, so you might want to post an example VOD for us to look at.

Thanks for the reply.

I know a few things are not working in my favour, like my upload speed and probably my cpu and memory. I don't expect a brilliant stream, but i do know, i could get better results. Thanks for the tips, i will try it out. I might just record and post the results here. Also, i'm eager to upgrade some of my specs, but i'm not a spec guru in any way, so some good pointers will be appreciated.

The LGA2011 chipset your motherboard uses doesn't leave much room for upgrading without spending a bundle on something like a six core 3930K/4930K, so unless you've got money to burn you would probably be better off with a good aftermarket cooling solution and a bit of overclocking.

Your streams in that log were extremely short, so statistically, not much weight to those results.

That said, if those results are accurate, you might still be able to crank up the preset to Fast. I don't think memory speed is even a factor. Your upload speed certainly is. and if you can't go higher than that, then you're pretty much left with improving quality through x264 settings.

And as for upgrades, a six core CPU would actually be really nice for you. You'd be able to run at Fast or Medium preset which would make the most use of the bitrate you have available. But I agree, you should probably try overlocking first. Even if you can't overclock your way to a better preset and decide to get a 6-core CPU, you can still use the aftermarket cooling solution you get to do that overclock with the new CPU.

And by the way, your current CPU is still better than most people's.

problem with the 3820 is that theres no free multi available like on the ivy e series :( so even overclocking is not a plan but still fast preset should actually be no problem depending on what game you are trying to stream

Thank you all for the tips.

I do know my computer is more than decent to play games. But my cpu and upload speed could improve. The shitty thing is, i'm not able to get more upload speed then i'm getting now, no fiber yet and the copper cable which feeds my connection has to travel 3km to my house lol.

I'll still try out new presets, i just tried the slow ones, almost the same result, so no improvement there sadly. I was planning on buying a new cpu, because i would really like to stream, i spend loads of time playing them :).

Another question. Can someone explain me what Process Priority Class does ? And what would be a good starting point based on the log i posted ?

Process priority is supposed to tell Windows to emphasize or de-emphasize OBS before or after whatever else is running. For some people their game runs like shit but OBS runs fine, they need to lower the process priority. For other people their game runs great but OBS runs like shit no matter what they do, they need to increase OBS' process priority. If you're not having problems with your game's fps going into the gutter or OBS not being able to encode even on the easiest settings, you don't need to mess with it.

That said, I don't know how well it works. Windows is just kinda bad at giving every application the right amount of CPU time. I like to take direct control using the "threads=" advanced command and give OBS exactly how many threads I determine it needs. This trick is pretty advanced and isn't a good idea unless you understand x264 fairly well and are willing to test things a lot.

As for you, you shouldn't skip around on your presets, just go one step at a time, look at your log file afterwards. If you see that you're duplicating or skipping frames (up 1% is probably fine, more than that is noticeable), you've used too slow of a preset, back it off one. Very few people are going to be able to do Medium or anything slower at 720p60 or 1080p30 with anything less than a 6-core Intel Extreme CPU, not even the AMD 8-cores.

fx 8's cant handle it by far they tend to start failing at 720@60 with faster preset already some can barely handle 720p@60 with veryfast no idea why ... seen a lot people having problems with the fx 6 and 8 cores

but the i7 3820k is actually pretty decent just make sure to use your 64bit client since it will provide you with maybe another 2-3% performance ... its not much but its something right?

I'm running a 64bit client indeed. It's decent yeah. I think i know what specs i need to upgrade, or at least, gain better results with a 6 core CPU. The other bit, the upload speed, is something i worry about, it's really a bottleneck. I'm going to look into upgrading, if it's possible, or just hope fiber optics will be available in the near future!

but to be honest 720@60 with 2k bitrate is not actually looking bad in my opinion i've tryed it my own and i had to say its okay obviously it could be better but i would watch it but it depends on the game ... league would be no problem at all csgo is kinda decent for dayz or wow its not really going to work out well

Happens i play Dayz, i heard shit happens too :). I did have better results while playing Fallout, a bit laggy, but i could fix that. Quality was decent enough.

I've been tweaking a lot and i found out, my stream looks better when i don't use resolution downscale, i tried 25fps, but i'm not too sure if 30fps makes a difference in quality. Only thing i want to test is my preset, i have it on Faster right now, i'm still going to try out Veryfast and Fast.
